Supporting bright girls in need

Every year the Commonwealth Countries League Education Fund sponsors girls around the Commonwealth with their secondary schooling. The scheme enables girls, who have academic potential but whose parents or guardians cannot support them financially, to continue their secondary education in their own Commonwealth country.

3000 girls have already been supported in this way.

Their progress is closely monitored and their success stories are inspiring.

This is Florence’s (Nigeria) story:

Florence’s father does not work and her mother sells foodstuff in a local market. Her parents can hardly afford basic school needs for their children, although they want the best for them.
In a letter to the fund, Florence wrote:

"I thank you very much for considering me worthy of your scholarship award. I am very delighted to know that you are interested in the welfare of the poor people who can make it through hard work...I strongly believe that this sponsorship is given to me due to my performance in school. I came first in my class and I desire to become a medical doctor...I promise to make good use of this opportunity and be useful to myself, my family and country. What you do for me I shall do for others in the future"

In October 2010, Friends of the Commonwealth and Young Diplomats in London organised a Masquerade ball in aid of the CCL Education Fund. The event raised £2000 to support the great work done by the CCL Education Fund and continue to help these girls fulfil their potential and realise their dreams.
